The strategies of protection for distributed generation（DG） and microgrid are analyzed in macroscopic view. The research objects and research methods of protection for DG are analyzed. Based on the current achievements， four strategies of protection for DG are summarized and compared. The protection for AC microgrid is analyzed in the view of whether it depends on communication or not， and a thought of establishing microgrid switch station is presented. The feasibility of DC microgrid is analyzed. The size of DC microgrid is proposed， and the main points of protection for DC microgrid are discussed. At last， based on the grid topology， the connection strategies of DG and microgrid are proposed.
